Kazakh berkutchi at the Serektas mountains
Kazakh Berkutchi
Berkut is the Kazakh name for the eagle and so a man who trains and hunts with an eagle is known as a Berkutchi.
Vadim tells me this picture was painted after he was riding together with some western eagle falconers and Kazakh berkutchi at the Serektas mountains (hills about 200 km to the west of Alma-Ata). He was impressed by the evening light and the shadows on the hills which show the shapes of the hills. It was at the end of November -and was inspired by the golden light and blue silver hoar frost in the shadows just before sunset.
